SPEEDO

A radical development of the well established SloMo retiming plug-in from the Monsters suite with enhanced motion estimation algorithms and greater user control. Speedo is available as a plug-in for Autodesk Systems, Avid DS, eyeon Digital Fusion, Assimilate Scratch and Quantel Generation Q.

Processing Controls

Global presets allow the user to quickly select the output quality required ranging from rapid preview to best quality output. Where more refined control is required the user has full control over Speedo processing:

Algorithm fine tuning - the advanced user can control how the algorithm computes the motion vectors including the resolution of the vector field, the number of stages and iterations the algorithm performs and the degree of smoothing applied.

Luminance correction - optionally compensates for overall brightness shifts between frames before computing motion vectors. Process RGB - optionally calculate motion vectors using all 3 RGB channels rather than luminance.

Retiming Features

Fixed mode - applies a constant retiming factor across the entire clip. The retiming factor can be defined as a multiple, percentage, required FPS or required output length.

Varispeed mode - use a function curve to create a clip with sections that speed up, slow down or even reverse in time.

Motion Blur - add high quality motion blur using motion vectors with simulated shutter angle and phase.

LENZ

A powerful collection of lens tools comprising five separate plug-ins which correct (or add) lens distortion and simulate lens flares, crash zoom and rack defocus effects. Together they provide the core toolset for most lens related tasks.

LensCorrect
LensCorrect is used to correct for or add both symmetric (radial) and asymmetric (x and y curvature) lens distortions.

Features include:

  • Automatically correct radial distortion, including edge distortion by simply defining features in the input image that should be straight lines
  • Manual controls for correcting or adding radial distortion, asymmetric distortion and squeeze
  • Easily re-apply removed distortion - this allows footage to be corrected for compositing with other footage or CG elements, and then be re-distorted back to the original clip

LensFlare
Lensflare is a sophisticated light effects generator, which can create custom lens flares and a whole range of other lighting effects.

Features include:

  • Combine multiple lens primitives such as flares, glows, rings and aperture reflections each with separate parameter controls
  • Use an obscuration clip to automatically control light brightness
  • Automatically track a light source in the input clip, or use a separate tracking clip to improve tracking accuracy

Flare
Flare is a more simple flare generator that can be used to create multiple flares and glints from an input light map. This complements Lensflare, which is used to create far more tailored individual effects.

CrashZoom
CrashZoom emulates the effect of holding the shutter open in a camera with a zoom lens while swiftly changing the focal length of the lens. Similar effects would happen if a camera were dollied very quickly towards a target. Might also be called convergence blur.

RackDefocus
Rackdefocus produces a realistic defocus effect with bright source and aperture shape simulation.

FLUIDZ

A new set of four plug-ins that use the power of 2d fluid dynamics to produce beautiful, flowing, fluid effects and transitions. The set comprises several plug-ins including Fire, ImageFlow, ClipFlow and TransFlow.

Fire
The Fire plug-in creates fluid flow simulations of a range of flames types from a single flame up to a raging fire. A number of presets are supplied together with control over flame type, colour, intensity, smoke, winds and barriers.

ImageFlow
ImageFlow is a general fluids ‘engine’, which can be used to dissolve images into fluids, create fluid mixing effects and simulate fluids flowing through channels or around obstructions. A number of presets are supplied for fluids of different densities and characteristics. The fluid effects created are extremely smooth and organic exactly because they are true fluid simulations, with each sequence evolving from a set of initial conditions under the influence of defined external forces.

ClipFlow
The ClipFlow plug-in is similar to ImageFlow but flows input clips rather than individual frames. The original clip is seen to continue playing as the clip begins to flow.

TransFlow
TransFlow can be used to great effect to create a range of unique fluid transitions and wipes in which the outgoing clip flows away to reveal the incoming clip or transitions from one clip to the other through a fluid mix. The initial settings can be modified to create a wide range of different effects.

Three different types of wipe/transition can be created:

  • A fluid “reveal” in which a fluid wavefront passes across the screen replacing the outgoing clip with the incoming clip. In this case neither clip undergoes fluid deformation.
  • A fluid “wipe” in which the outgoing clip flows off the screen to reveal the incoming clip beneath. In this case the outgoing image is deformed into a fluid but the underlying incoming clip is not.
  • A fluid “mix” in which the outgoing clip is seen to dissolve into a fluid mix and then resolve back out to the incoming clip.

TRAILZ

A new set of 7 plug-ins that uses motion analysis to create 3 main types of trail: smooth, particulate, and “stop-motion”. Moving luminous sources are tracked to produce the trails and full control is given over trail generation, trail type and subsequent evolution.

Trail Generation: the motion of luminous sources across the source image are analysed and a trail is generated along the motion paths whenever the luminance is above a defined threshold. Alternatively, users can control which elements of
the image should leave a trail with a second input clip.

Trail Evolution: depending on the plug-in, there is full control over trail length, transparency, glow and decay including a wind force that can act on particulate trails.

TrailAll
TrailAll will automatically composite every frame over the last creating an endless trail. There are no length or decay controls inside the plugin. Best used with a matte input that has clean sharp edges however the plugin will try to compensate using the luminance of the source input if there is no matte fed into the inputs.

TrailAverage
TraliAverage creates trails using an averaging algorithm. There are 2 main processing modes, with or without motion analysis. With motion analysis the averaged trail is smooth and creamy filling in the missing information from the input clip. When used without motion estimation there are 3 processing modes, Straight (normal averaging) Boost (boosts the luminance of the averaging) and Stagger (average the red, green and blue separately over time). There is also a built in blur function.

Note: for a fast preview of where the trail will be created turn off motion to process a preview and then on again for the final render.

TrailDecay
TrailDecay processes a trail where every frame is composited automatically over the last and then decays at a rate that is set by a user control. This is best used with a matte input, however the plugin will try to compensate if there is no matte input and avoids both the need to additive key and mixing the trail into the underlying frames.

TrailLive
TrailLive locates motion within an image based on a luminance threshold and draws lines along the motion data derived. The trails created with this plugin have an organic, live motion based on the speed and luminance of the source. The trails can be used to fake long night exposures from an image and there are controls for shutter and fade rate to assist in the effect.

TrailOver
TrailOver is used to create very long trail sequences. The trail length is determined by the number of frames specified in the endurance and fade length controls. Although this plug-in has long processing times, it is a useful tool to create an extremely long effect that would be otherwise difficult to create in TrailStopMo.

TrailParticle
Particle trail generation using motion estimation to control the direction and velocity of the particles movement. Controls are provided for particle shape and type.

TrailStopMo
TrailStopMo has the features of TrailAll and TrailDecay but with optional motion estimation to give a smoother result. There is also a “fluctuate” control to strobe the trail over time.
