SAPPHIRE PLUG-INS HELP RFI BEAT THE CLOCK
With noon-time satellite feeds looming over his head every day of his working life, Avid Editor Sean Linderman at L.A.-based promo company RFI [Robert Faulk Incorporated] looks for every speed advantage when creating promos and opens for "Entertainment Tonight." When Linderman learned that some of the effects he'd seen on a sports network were created with Sapphire Plug-ins, he immediately brought the package in-house."I don't have time to sit around and tinker. My time constraints are pretty extreme," says Linderman. "While RFI has a graphics department to assist editors with design, it's great that I can create some effects on my own right within the Avid. It saves me time, and it saves them time."
A recent adopter of Sapphire Plug-ins, RFI has worked on promos for the "Howie Mandell Show," "RealTV," and "Maximum Exposure," as well as "Entertainment Tonight." Immediately after putting the Sapphire tools into play, Linderman noticed a marked difference between the GenArts' effects and other plug-ins. "Sapphire's render speed is amazingly fast!" he noted - unlike other plug-ins that he had stopped using because the render time was too long. He explained further, "If a producer's right there with me, I can just drop a Glow right into a transition. It's so fast that it's done before they can even ask what I'm doing."
Another speed advantage was Sapphire's short learning curve. "I was able to go right in and use the effects immediately," Linderman said. "It was really very easy to use, with no training at all - especially since the GenArts website gives you a visual reference of every effect." At Lifetime TV, the Sapphire Plug-ins are used to give the network promos a very distinctive look, explains Coffey:
Beyond Sapphire's speed advantages, the GenArts' plug-ins help RFI to achieve even more creative looks for their promos and opens. Says Linderman, "I'd been using the same 'little white flash' effect on transitions for years and really wanted to update it. I love the Glow effect. It made the spot look much different; the effect is more of a seamless transition than a white flash now. It looks much cooler. And because we didn't have to go to the graphics department, we saved time and money," concludes Linderman.
